Life on a ship can be taxing, both mentally and physically because of the long hours, difficult working condition and isolation. However, people working on board ships are compensated for their hardship by salaries which are often multiples of what they may earn for a similar job on land.
In a ship, the captain who usually has many years of sailing experience, gets the highest salary and is responsible for the ship. Among the ship crew, the technical staff consisting of marine engineers receive the highest salary among crew with equivalent experience. In some countries, maritime academies exist which provide specialized training , in other countries, mechanical engineers receive on the job training on board the ship.
